The Peloponnese is a region with varied landscape and history. From Medieaval walled cities to rich olive groves, Venetian port town and quaint amphitheatrical fishing villages. There are big cosmopolitan cities here and tiny isolated mountain villages.
There is a lot of coastline here and four dramatic peninsulas. In the ancient years, here was were Paris abducted Helen to kick off the most famous war of all times, the ancient Olympic games were born in this region, the Bacchus cult flourished here, too. This is the region where the revolution against the Turks first took form and following that this is where the very first capital of the modern Greek state was born.
There are great modern man-made landmarks here, such as the Corinth Canal and the Rio-Antirrio bridge. And there are great ancient landmarks too, such as the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, world-famous for its amazing natural acoustics. There were great empires built and destroyed here, such as the Myceneans who ruled from their administrative centre in the Argolis Peninsula from 1600 to 1100 BC.
One of the most ambient of all the towns in the region is Nafplio, loved and popular for its Venetian architecture, its fortresses, houses and mansions and the famous tiny island of the Bourtzi. This was the first capital of modern Greece.
The Peloponnese boasts numerous archaeological sites, excellently preserved. Here is the ancient town and temple of Epikouros Apollo, Bassae. The ancient city of Corinth is here and the ancient Spartan colony of Mistra. The walled Mediaeval fortress city of Monemvasia is unique in all of Greece. The palace of Nestor can he found in Pylos, an ancient religious settlement in Tegea and and the ruins of an ancient fortified settlement can be seen in Tiryns
But of course, the real stars of the region are the modern Greeks and their customs and traditions. Best of all is the region's culinary delights, which are like pure gifts from the gods. This is a region of plenty and the countless restaurants and tavernas are testament to this. And the menus are full of the region's specialities, such as avgolemono soup, lamb fricassee, stifado, arni psito (lamb on the spit), kokoretsi, (entrails on the spit) and lots and lots of wine. Apart from the Mavrodafni wine, the white wine from Mantinea is another quality product.
When it comes to the Peloponnese is is ultimately the mix between the modern and the ancient that makes it a perfect destination. The region sustains a balance between natural beauty and ancient beauty that makes the region so enticing. A beautiful beach and a tasty meal is one thing, but a coastline and a taverna near a sanctuary or an ancient temple or the ruins of a Neolithic settlement simply makes the experience of the Peloponnese all the more intense and sublime. When in the Peloponnese it truly seems as if one is holidaying with Zeus.
