A Brief introduction to Ionian Islands

The Ionian islands located in the Ionian Sea in western Greece are of a unique character mainly because of the intense Venetian influences in custom and architecture. Corfu or Kerkyra is the best known of this cluster of islands and tourism to the island of Kefalonia experienced a massive boom after Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and yet, many parts of the region are still utterly unspoilt and offer a true authentic escape for those wishing to experience the Greek island life without the over-exploitation that tourism-rich areas suffer from. In fact, some say that the Ionian Islands are the most beautiful islands in Greece. Certainly they are full of exotic myth, considering the kingdom of Odysseus once reigned in this region.

The islands are full of contrasts, dramatic mountains and lazy beaches lie side by side on each of the seven principal islands – Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, paxi, Zakynthos, Ithaka and Kythira – of the Ionian. Yachting activities are just as popular here as lazy days on the beach.
Kefalonia is the largest of the lot but that doesn't mean that it isn't tranquil. It is and has splendid scenery to match, from caves to beaches, to mountains, to architecture and many fascinating traditions. After Kefalonia, in terms of size, comes Corfu, though Corfu is probably the most famous of the Ionian Isles.
The Palia Poli, literally “old town” is vibrant and social and full of picturesque Venetian architecture, characteristic of most of the region. Corfu is also the most vibrant of the islands in terms of its nightclubs and bars. Summer season in Corfu is a great place to enjoy a bustling and social nightlife and a lazy and sun-filled day.

The island of Paxi together with its neighbouring Antipaxi are two exquisite islands, tranquil and relatively quiet, but full of opportunities for tourists. One of the best things here are the excellent fish tavernas that line the beaches. Further to the south of Paxi is the island of Lefkada, also known as Lefkas, quite popular for two things: the party town and resort of Nidri and the privately owned island of the family Onassis, Skorpios. One cannot visit Skorpios, but can only view it from the rest of the island or from the distance of a boat cruise, and this adds to its charm.

Itakia
Ithaka is situated south of Kefalonia and is a tiny island with a big history, after all, its name is associated with the mythical Ithaca, the land of Odysseus. Today, Ithaki is a small and verdant island rich with olive groves and idyllic beaches and a lazy fishing economy.

Zakynthos
On Zakynthos one finds a popular and cosmopolitan island with excellent resorts and a rich cultural heritage. With amazing Venetian architecture, this is a very romantic island, also known for the Italian-influenced songs, called the Kantades. Zakynthos is very lively during the summer season and an excellent destination during spring and autumn, when the tourist rush dies down.

Kythira
On the island of Kythira, you will find the most quaint architecture, with Venetian and Ottoman influences, and the least developed destination in the Ionian, which also makes up for its charm. It is uniquely beautiful, with a small permanent population.

The islands have been inhabited since the most ancient times, as early as the ninth century BC and have been through various historical rule – such as Venetian and Byzantine – which gives them their unique and complex character, but it the myth of Odysseus that pervades the region, and while the historical Ithaca has yet to be determined, the epic ancient story is everywhere.
